The BMW M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine features superior power delivery and the striking characteristic M engine sound. Two mono-scroll turbochargers, direct High-Precision Injection, fully variable valve control and variable camshaft control ensure outstanding performance.
8-speed M Steptronic with Drivelogic.
The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic offers numerous shifting options. You can shift manually using the gear lever or the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, or select one of three automatic programmes using Drivelogic.
M xDrive.
M xDrive with Active M Differential guarantees maximum traction and driving dynamics for everyday driving, as well as at the racetrack. The optional M specific technology combines the typical agility of a rear-wheel drive with the control of an all-wheel drive. You can choose between the drive variants 4WD, 4WD Sport and – in DSC-off mode – 2WD.
M Compound brake, Red high-gloss.
Thanks to the use of various materials, M Compound brakes achieve outstanding deceleration values, are extremely stable and weigh less. The brake calipers in Red high-gloss with M lettering lend this high-performance brake system a distinctly sporty appearance.
M Carbon ceramic brake.
The M Carbon ceramic brake delivers braking power more directly. It contributes to a lower vehicle weight, which has a positive impact on agility, dynamics and acceleration. The technical equipment is visible through carbon-ceramic brake discs and calipers in the colour Gold matt with M lettering on the front and rear axle on the outside. Due to specific material properties, increased operating noise may occur during braking, e.g. in case of prolonged, low load or in wet conditions shortly before vehicle standstill. The design-related noise can be avoided by braking the brake dry in case of wetness or loading the brake more heavily after a long, low braking load. The influence of wetness and road salt cause brake effectiveness to correspond to that of a conventional brake system. This reduced braking power can be compensated for with a greater pressure on the pedal. The functional noises have no influence on the performance, operational safety and stability of the brake.
M Sport exhaust system.
The M Sport exhaust system delivers a dynamic sound that can be modified via the integrated exhaust valve mechanism. The SPORT and SPORT+ programmes, which can be selected via the SETUP button, are accentuated by an even more intense engine sound, while the comfort-oriented programme prioritises more discreet engine acoustics.
Front design.
The front of BMW M3 Competition Saloon is characterised by the expressive M kidney grille in a reduced interpretation for maximum dynamic effect. In a frameless design for the first time ever, the completely black kidney grille with horizontal M typical double louvres permits the maximum throughput of cooling air for the high-revving M power unit. Together with the narrow headlights leading towards the kidney grille, the central air inlet with its large trapezoidal design highlights the athletic character of the vehicle.
Side design.
With its crisply defined proportions and distinctive four-door 3-box design – front, passenger compartment and rear are formally and recognisably separated – the silhouette of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon creates an agile and nimble effect. The black carbon roof and the aerodynamically optimised sill area inspired by motorsport press the silhouette of the vehicle even closer to the road both optically and physically. Together with the M gills featuring model logo and the striking M forged wheels with M Compound brake, the dynamically designed exterior mirrors in typical M double-slat design create additional sporting highlights.

CFRP roof.
As part of BMW's intelligent lightweight construction, the carbon roof made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) helps to reduce the car's mass, and shifts the car's centre of gravity lower. This leads to an increase in agility and dynamics when taking a bend, accelerating and braking.
Rear design.
The rear of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon systematically continues the sporty and agile appearance of the side section. Alongside the muscular wheel arches, the broad track width of the M specific axles produces a powerful stance that impressively underlines the performance-oriented ambitions of the sports saloon. Two pairs of typical M twin tailpipes in black chrome and a discreet spoiler in black high-gloss underline the exclusive motorsport character of the vehicle.
M Sport seats.
The multi-adjustable M Sport seats with bucket seat character and partly integrated headrest provide excellent lateral support for you and your front passenger. BMW M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engines.
The M340i xDrive is powered by a three-litre inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology. With an output of 275 kW (374 hp) and a maximum torque of 500 Nm, it has an extremely sporty driving performance. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds. The M340d xDrive comes with a 6-cylinder diesel engine and impresses with an output of 250 kW (340 hp) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds.
M sport differential.
The M sport differential optimises traction and driving stability. Traction is optimised with the help of an electronically operated device that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels.
8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers incredibly sporty gear changes. Whether automatic or manual using gearshift paddles or gear lever – for comfortable coasting or dynamic driving. In SPORT mode and with the gear lever in the left-hand S/M position, the gear shifts are configured for the best performance.
M Sport brake.
The M Sport brake has four-piston fixed callipers at the front and single-piston floating callipers at the rear in red with the M designation and features large brake discs to ensure an outstanding braking performance.
Variable sport steering.
The Variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures that less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel with varying steering ratios. This improves handling when driving more dynamically and reduces the effort needed to steer when parking and turning.
Adaptive M suspension.
The 10 millimetre lowered Adaptive M suspension can be electrically adjusted at any time to suit the road and driving conditions. Drivers can also adjust the suspension characteristics via the Driving Experience Control to enable their preferred driving style at the time – from comfortable to athletic with agile handling.
Mild hybrid technology.
Mild hybrid technology is used to recover braking energy and supports the combustion engine during acceleration with electric power. This reduces fuel consumption and emissions while giving you a dynamic advantage. The mild hybrid technology also makes the Automatic Start/Stop function faster and more comfortable. M Aerodynamic package.

M specific instrument cluster.
The M specific instrument cluster available on the M3 Competition, offers a particularly precise and focused display of driving data in the SPORT and TRACK modes. In this way, values such as boost pressure or tyre pressure and temperatures are always in view, even on the race track. Operation and configuration is carried out using the M MODE button on the control unit in the centre console.
BMW Live Cockpit Professional.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional with navigation function includes two high-quality displays consisting of a high-resolution 10.25" Control Display that can be operated by touch and a fully digital 12.3" instrument display. The BMW Operating System 7 can also be operated via the iDrive Touch Controller.
M Setup.
Available on the M3 Competition model, the M Setup allows you to configure various driving dynamics parameters such as engine, transmission and steering characteristics, damper settings, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) control intensity or the power distribution of the optional M xDrive all-wheel-drive system according to your individual requirements.
Integrated M specific braking system.
In addition to saving approximately 2 kg in weight, the integrated M specific braking system of the BMW M3 Competition Saloon provides very high braking dynamics. For a maximum level of individualisation, the driver can choose between "Comfort" and "Sport" brake pedal parameters according to the situation. Depending on the parameters, the response behavior is designed differently. In "Sport" mode, deceleration is higher with the same distance of pedal travel particularly at low speeds while the response of the two parameter settings is very similar at high speeds.
BMW Head-Up Display.
The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display with M specific functions* projects information relevant for the journey directly into your field of vision. With the press of a button, the driver can switch to the M specific display, which includes a gear indicator, the rpm as a dynamic range curve with shift lights indicating the optimal moment to shift as well as navigation tips. *M specific functions are available for BMW M3 Competition Saloon.
Digital Key.
Why take your key with you if you have your smartphone with you? You can lock and unlock your BMW and even start it with the Digital Key. You can also authorise up to five people with an iPhone* – if compatible – to use your BMW.
